It is standard procedure to clean and prep the area to be repaired. It must be dry and free of dust, grit, oil/grease and glue residue. This will be part of the cost of the repair. If an item is acceptably dirty (heavily soiled items may not be accepted) and would benefit from a cleaning you can request it be washed, or washing may be recommended before going ahead with the repair. It can be washed here in a domestic, front load washing machine, or washed by hand. A technical fabric wash like Nikwax, Grangers or Revivex, is usually used to wash waterproof breathable and puffy jackets. A combination of regular, unscented HE detergent and a bit of plain dishsoap to cut through thicker oil and grease is an option too. Spot cleaning with degreaser and/or isopropanol alcohol for really tough residues may be needed. Cleaning is charged at the shop rate plus materials and starts at $15 a wash per garment. Washing large items like tents and tarps is very labour, time and space intensive, and thus can be prohibitively costly. Sleeping bags and very large articles should be taken to a professional laundromat and washed/dried in the large capacity machines there.

• there is a pin and box mechanism at the very bottom of the zipper (on ones that separate, like on jackets). The pin must be all the way down in the box, and for two way zippers, the bottom slider must be yanked all the way down on the pins

• especially for older zippers, two way zippers and waterproof zippers (shiny finish, smooth on the facing-out side) they can be extra difficult to line up perfectly at the very bottom

• take your time and make sure the pins and the first couple teeth are lined up properly, if they aren’t, this is likely why the zipper is splitting. Also, over time, the zipper will warp and wear unevenly and the pin may be damaged, which can make the whole zipper unusable

• there is a focus on quality, craftsmanship and durabilty, in every repair

• additionally, they may be time intensive

• they may require specialized tools, techniques, machines and materials

• often a lot of time and prior learning has been invested to acquire and perfect sewing skills and to determine the best, most efficient and durable techniques and materials for repairs

• use of quality materials and supplies that are industry specific, for example: YKK zippers, Gutermann thread, Barge adhesives, 3 ply stretch Gortex, Melco seam sealing tapes

• currently, in our geographical area, many of the quality repair materials and notions must be ordered from afar and from specialty suppliers, often located in the United States, thus incurring the additional costs of shipping, duties, exchange rates, time and travel.

Yes. However, I am not a warranty accredited repair or diagnosing facility, and depending on the brand and your situation, my repair work may, or may not be fully covered under warranty, or it may be only partially covered (eg., a credit of a certain amount towards the repair)

No. However, repairs will be done to the best of the technician’s knowledge and ability at the time, with quality, industry standard materials and techniques. If a repair fails prematurely and/or you are really unhappy with it, please get in touch and I will work with you to find a satisfactory solution and rectify the repair.

Please refer to the Repairs Price List. The hourly rate is $55/hour plus materials. $20 is the minimum charge. Every effort is made to give an accurate and fair estimate. However, sometimes repairs end up costing more due to unforseen issues. And…. sometimes they cost less! You will be contacted if the cost/time is significantly more than originally anticipated and asked if you wish to proceed.

If an employer or organization or another person will be paying directly for the repair, please provide their details: name, email address, phone number, etc.

Yes! Sliders/pulls start at $25. A full top to bottom replacement on a ski jacket can be $120-155+. Fleece jackets and kids jackets and half zipper replacements are $45-65+. So there is quite a range. Please see the Repairs Price List for more details or get in touch to get an estimate.
