Common zipper repairs

A few common zipper issues are highlighted below. These zipper issues apply to any items where zippers are found: clothing, footwear, tents/tipis, boat and snowmobile covers, all types of packs, bags and luggage, purses and pouches, pontoon skins, life jackets/PFDs, etc.

Slider/pull is not working or is missing

This is the most straight forward zipper repair. The zipper separates. The slider jams. Everything else about the zipper is fine. You likely just need a new slider (or two for a two-way pair) and you’re on your way.

Damaged tape and teeth

There are three main types of zippers: molded plastic, coil and metal. The coil can start to pull away from the tape. Luckily, it is possible to sew it back in small increments and that sometimes fixes the zipper, avoiding a costly full replacement. If the tooth damage is at one end of the zipper, the zipper can just be shortened and still be useable. Half replacements of just the damaged side are also an option and encouraged.
